Is a Chic Over on our 2025 cards?
Do you ever watch a film, and you are immediately inspired? An inspiration that lingers in your mind for days and intrudes on every choice you make for the foreseeable. Well… me too. I watched The Devil Wears Prada the other day for the millionth time (roughly), and now every single outfit I leave the house in is just never enough.
And it got me thinking…
I would look so much cuter if I wore a pair of kitten heels rather than trainers, or how much more sophisticated I would be with a light jacket rather than my oversized hoodie. Even my winter coat feels far too underdressed.
There is nothing I love more than being comfortable in my casuals… but is that enough nowadays?
A sense of sloppiness is encompassing the fashion industry, where relaxed tones take over each outfit. Tracksuits are more popular than ever, trainers are the go-to, and a slick back is much more preferred than a blowout- trust me I am speaking from experience.
I have no intention of dissing the street/ casual style, if anything I am its biggest supporter, but it does sometimes leave me missing a fashion trend that I have never even lived through.
I have an image in my head. An image painted with fluorescent fabrics, unique pairings, accessories over-kill and basically anything that could possibly uplift an outfit and bring it to life. An image that resembles not just the likes of The Devil Wears Prada, but also Pretty Women, Clueless, Mean Girls, and How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days.
In these characters’ lives, there is only room for a fabulous outfit. Anything else will simply not do.
I understand that a life where you must style your hair daily, wear something completely different from yesterday, and then go about your whole day may be a little uncomfortable / is not maintainable.
If anything, it sounds exhausting for anyone similar to me, who has at least two meltdowns before being ready to leave. This extra stress, on top of a standard, daily meltdown would consume so much of my time. Today's breakdown was a result of my favourite knit jumper getting caught on the door handle (girls, I know you feel my pain). But minus all those things, wouldn’t it be nice to walk into every room feeling confident that you look absolutely fabulous?
I always used to be scared of that dreaded feeling of being too overdressed, but I now only get it from the fear of being underdressed. Swapping trainers for boots, hoodie for knit, joggers for jeans.
Everything can be made to look a little bit better. And since watching Andy Sachs' unforgettable fashion transformation, Miranda Priestley’s iconic fur coat struts, and even Gisele Bündchen’s appearance wearing office chic- it leaves me feeling utterly disappointed as I sit there in my sweats.
The thing about looking good is you must feel good in exchange. There is simply no better style than confidence. Ultimately it is your choice, I’m sure a tracksuit will make you look just as good as anything else in your wardrobe, but there is no feeling quite like stepping out dressed in an outfit that you know will turn heads.
So, what do we say readers… why don’t we make the next trend, the most Style-ish one yet?
