The Autumn/ Winter fashion trends everyone should fall for
The York Christmas Markets are my favourite place to be in December. The endless trail of stalls with offerings of scarves, candles, baked goods, and genuinely the nicest hot dog I may have ever had.
As I was smelling every gingerbread candle I could get my hands on (spoiler- I ended up buying one), eyeing up every brownie and cookie stall I could see (another spoiler- I got one of each), and oozing over the jewellery store that had the most gorgeous and unusual rings I’d ever seen (no spoiler this time they were too expensive), my attention was undoubtedly being pulled elsewhere.
With each autumnal season that passes, the outfit seems to get chicer and more exclusive than the last.
Winter is slowly becoming my favourite season yet. Each exciting month follows another, and the constant, cozy feeling of warm clothes sticks around.
It might be the excessive layering or the variety of neutrals, but there’s something about Winter fashion that makes the dark days so much dreamier.
And it got me thinking…
Weather that requires you to layer your outfit and add more elements, not only provides you with the warmth and cosiness on the colder days, but it also gives you more freedom to explore what an outfit could be.
Adding colours you wouldn’t usually wear, or items you wouldn’t usually look twice at makes stepping out into the crisp winter air so much more exciting than before. A chunky, knit scarf in the brightest of colours; bulky, black boots as you stomp through the street; a long, neutral trench coat completing the perfect fall fit.
Theres so much variety in Winter, it makes it almost impossible to not make every day outfits a 10/10 .
After roaming around the streets of York all day I have come to a decision of my favourite A/W trends.
PS - the triple chocolate, millionaires, shortbread brownie is not in this list … but it was definitely a favourite.
The Cap and Scarf Look
A sudden trend has taken the streets by storm: wearing your scarf over your cap- and I’m in love with it. First- the convenience, keeping your head, ears and neck warm all at the same time, and second- the elegance of this look. Classic but trendy in the same moment.
Fur coats
We’ve seen them all over our social media pages, but I never quite knew the popularity fur coats had gained until yesterday. Neutral colours of black, brown, grey and cream transform an outfit from general to glamour instantly.
Earmuffs
Oh, how I have been waiting for earmuffs to become trendy again. I can’t think of anything worse than cold ears, and earmuffs not only prevent this, but they also completely uplift your outfit.
“General to glamour instantly.”
Wellington boots
These boots make an entire outfit, with bold patterns and colours, combined with thick, cotton socks that reach above. This footwear is perfect for typical British weather, but it is also taking the world of fashion by storm- with influencers like Kate Moss and Alexa Chung showcasing wellies as more than just for the fields.
I think it’s time that we stop limiting ourselves to the typical archives of winter from our wardrobes, and start uplifting every outfit we walk down the street in. I know the next time the Christmas Markets see me; I want to have everybody’s eyes following me as I go- and it’s not just because of the hot dog I’ll be eating.
Winter is a time for comfy cottons, neutrals, dreamy suedes, and countryside plaids. And I’m loving every cozy minute of it.
